The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg has been a metropolis of over one million inhabitants for 100 years and is Germany’s gateway to the world, with the largest German and second-largest European seaport. Some 131 000 jobs are directly or indirectly linked to the port. Next to commerce, industry is a major economic factor, comprising the petroleum processing, electrical engineering, chemical, mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, aerospace and food industries. But the service sector, too, with its banks and insurance companies, as well as a diversified media landscape, make the city state, which is home to 1.7 million inhabitants, a major economic player. The management consultancy Odgers Berndtson has been on site since 2004.
